Croom WMA
« on: June 02, 2009, 03:44:14 PM »
This thread is to discuss and post photos of the Croom WMA (wildlife management area) located in Brooksville, FL near the corner of Hwy 98/50 and I-75. It contains 20,595 acres of forest roads containing sand, hard pack and a little mud.

The Forest roads are mostly flat. FR2 has some inclines with a few mud spots with a very scenic prairie to the north with rolling hills. There's one or two fun looking pit areas, but they are closed.

The best way to get there is I-75 to Hwy 98/50 and turn right on High Corner Rd.

I like riding croom. Not a lot of obstacles or much need for 4wd - but it's a nice place to just put around in the woods.  Usually see a lotta wildlife too.

True. There are some pretty spots in there. The weather was perfect, too.

It's a separate area from the OHV park divided by fences. It's not a super big place though. I would give it about 2 hours to scout it out unless your just flying through there. That's not including FR13 that I haven't checked out yet. If you take a look at the map (a PDF in the first post) you'll see that it leads to a question mark. Hmmm.

You can also go to the boat ramp areas and see the lake and streams. I know one of the campgrounds is right near stream and is worth a look, too. So if you add all that in, it would make it a day.

I went to Croom today. It's still mostly dry, but there are a bit more muddy spots than a few months ago. Makes it more interesting. There are bypass areas for most muddy areas if you want to stay dry. I even saw another Jeep! Here's a few pics.

I saw a squirrel and a bunny. One of the rangers told me he was looking for some guys on ATVs running through the wet areas out there. I think they scared any large wildlife away. The Jeep runs great, but the clutch is acting a little weird for the last few months. The pedal gets some added play the more you use it.

The kids went shopping with their mother yesterday. It's still a little too hot for them. I hope to get out next month when it cools down. Since I was by myself, I was able to run the whole trip with the top down, even on I-75 and not hear any complaints from anybody.  :)

Wow must be nice.... wife and three daughters and I'm lucky to crack a window without ruining somebodies hair!

lol, I guess I did ok on the last family trip then. The top was up, but we went with no side front windows and the back window rolled up. That was with the wife, daughter (7), and son (3), hats all around.
