With all those people standing around someone could have climbed down there and spotted for the guy.  Easily avoidable.

OUCH.
Actually, very bad driving involved with this rollover.  He went in the decline at a angle and if you watch his right tire its on level ground when he begins his rollover.  It was also slightly turned to the right.  They knew it was a sharp decline and should have steered into it.
Glad it wasnt me!

Yeah, that is one nasty tumble. I bet it is much steeper than it appears on the video. I'm sure it could have been avoided with a little spotting.

So, Bones (and others)…Being new to off-roading (on four wheels, anyway), I find this video potentially an interesting study for a 4x4 newb (i.e. me)…from the standpoint I don’t need that sh*t happening. If I roll like that, all that’s going to be left for me is skydiving.

The member a couple posts up says:

...He went in the decline at an angle and if you watch his right tire it’s on level ground when he begins his rollover. It was also slightly turned to the right. They knew it was a sharp decline and should have steered into it.

I agree that’s steeper than it looks and that he went into the slope at a slight right angle, because there was an obstruction there on the left. I’ve only got dirt bike experience to work with (for now) but, by analogy, it would seem to me that the bigger problem is that the guy is on the brakes from the get go and stayed on them. Even on a dirt bike, I’d have been in a restricting lower gear and way away from the brakes…both front and rear…letting the engine do the work. Then the only momentum change is throttleing (i.e speed up) if you need it. I also agree that he didn’t steer “into it,” it being the middle of the line. But he was on the brakes, and hard. At 0.44 seconds you can clearly see that his front wheels are locked. I think perhaps he couldn’t steer into the line at that point.

Wouldn’t a better technique have been to pick the line, be in the lowest possible gear due to the steep angle letting the engine slow ‘em down, stay off the brakes and then ride it out? Could be wrong; like I said, it looks like a good study.

(btw…I have a membership, but I forgot my info so I re-registered.  ;D )

Yes, the way you mentioned is the way to go. Your instincts from riding dirtbikes are perfect for Jeeps. Especially for picking lines. You just have to get used to 4 wheels. On an ATV I might have dragged the back brake a little, then mostly used engine braking. Since a stock Jeeps wheels are linked with the bias up front, you'd want to lay off those and maybe use 4 wheel drive low of which is super, super low compared to 4 high.

Well, I know the video is kind of old, but I hope those dudes are okay.

I think studying videos like these are pretty useful, plus I ordered a two hour wheeling techniques video from some online store. Dirt bikes, wheelers, whatever, it always seems to come back to the fundamentals.

Okay…I’m back on the Ocala Jeep roll.

Sounds like there’s some agreement on the above analysis, but I’m now noting the “bounce.” Those look to be pretty aggressive mud tires. The right rear tire bounces pretty high off the mound (0.45 second). Then it really bounces up when the tire hits the ground after that first bounce. That second bounce almost looks like it throws the jeep’s back end around into the roll, or it at least contributes to the roll. Why did it bounce like that (second bounce)? Just physics…or could the tire have been over inflated…or what?

Agreed this is old, and I know the spot and have been up and down it countless times.  I 4 lo it, 1st gear, air down to 10 psi always and steer the obstacle going down. Up hill... 4 lo it 2nd gear. I feel personally going up it requires more work than down, and my guess is this hill is at a 30-35 degree incline and about 125-150 foot long.  Agressive mud tire someone posted, ummm they are BFG a/t's aired up alot!  In fact... will be there this weekend and can shoot video if my gopro arrives.  "(  I have a pic or 2 of this hill to follow.

That was me.  :-[

I know a little more about tires now than I did when I posted that 'cuz I did a lot of research into types and brands of tires and looked at a lot of tires when I was looking for a new set for my TJ. Probably still couldn't tell a brand from a vid though.
